1. Why do I need to pay a membership fee? What are the benefits?
UCLC is a not for profit organization. We offer services to the public on a very small budget out of our own pocket. Members will enjoy the services such as free or discount lectures and activities. Also, UCLC will reimburse any teacher listed on our teacher list-serv for his/her BCI certificate fee.
2. What classes does UCLC offer?
UCLC will open an adult Chinese class and several youth after school classes in Chinese.
3. How can I find a tutor that is qualified for my kids?
You may contact the teacher or tutor on the teacher list-serv and interview him/her over the phone or through e-mail. If you decide to hire someone from the teacher list-serv, you may inquire or request UCLC for his/her BCI certificate.
4. Why do I need to submit a BCI certificate upon hire as a tutor?
Utah Law requires any teacher that practices teaching as a profession holds a clearance of background check. You only need it upon hire.
5. What is a Chinese Language Corner activity like?
UCLC organizes Chinese Language Corner activities four times a year. It is free and open to the public. The Chinese Language Corner activity aims at helping those who have learned some Chinese and are willing to perfect their spoken Chinese by meeting some native Chinese speakers, or simply speak Chinese to each other no matter young or old.
6. Can I purchase textbooks at UCLC?
Yes, UCLC will strive to help you with your textbook need both within the United States or abroad.
7. Does the Public School Chinese program grant credits?
Yes, the Public School Chinese program follows the guideline of core knowledge designed by the Association of American Foreign Languages. The Chinese program offers credits to students who pass a final test. For details, please contact the district or school world language coordinator that uses the UCLC Program that is powered by “Chinese World”.
8. I am interested in teaching Chinese, does UCLC offer teacher training classes?
Yes, UCLC offers teacher training classes through coordination with “Chinese World”. UCLC will also assist those who are qualified to enter the USOE Alternative Licensing Program to get certified as a licensed educator in Utah.
